Learning Greek at school

November 30th, 2007 · No Comments

I have several friends who are attending university or college in the USA right now. Part of the university experience for plenty of people is becoming Greek. No I do not mean they take out citizenship from Greece, its that they become part of a Greek organization. Most of them have joined or are linked up with a fraternity or sorority.

I think they joined more as a method of meeting some new folks. The usually classroom experience for newer students from out of town does not really lend itself to meeting new people. I noticed one change when everyone came back for Thanksgiving. They all had some Greek clothing. Its just their way of showing other folks that hey I’m joined up with some other folks.

Whats interesting is that the clothing really can be seen as a branding social experiment. They have noticed that when they wear Greek shirts people will simply stop them on the street and mention that they were part of the same fraternity or sorority when they went to school.

What they also found is that it can open to doors for you. Some people are more than willing to help their fellow greek member so they usually get asked what they are studying. They have received one or two business cards from people who said to stay in touch because of their area of study. So hey even if you’re headed to the beach bust out those Sorority Flip Flops, you never know who you’ll meet standing in line for a slushie.
